Certified Calibration Gas Cylinder Sizes Guide

SpecGas offers four main cylinder types: disposable aluminum, disposable steel, refillable aluminum or steel (high-pressure), and nickel-plated cylinders. Nickel-plated cylinders are recommended for highly reactive or corrosive gases such as H₂S, NH₃, HCl, NO, and HCN, where standard cylinder walls could degrade mixture stability.

Disposable cylinders (17–103 liters) are single-use, ideal for field applications and overseas shipping due to their lighter weight and DOT compliance for transport. Refillable aluminum, steel, or nickel-plated cylinders (up to 250 FT³) are suited for laboratory or fixed-installation use and offer a more cost-effective long-term solution via SpecGas's cylinder deposit program.

Yes. All SpecGas calibration gas standards are NIST Traceable, produced using gravimetric blending methods with proprietary techniques. This ensures every cylinder meets the accuracy requirements of analytical instruments used in EPA compliance, CEMS calibration, gas chromatography, and industrial safety monitoring programs.

Yes. SpecGas blends all mixtures in-house to customer specifications, including custom concentrations at PPB, low PPM, mid PPM, and percent levels. Customers can specify their required cylinder size, cylinder type, balance gas, and concentration tolerance. Custom blends are available across all gas classifications including reactive, toxic, hydrocarbon, rare gas, and VOC mixtures.

For reactive and toxic gases, SpecGas recommends treated disposable aluminum cylinders (58-liter gas capacity) or nickel-plated refillable cylinders (6.8–44 liters internal volume). SpecGas's proprietary internal cylinder treatment process passivates cylinder walls, preventing reactive gas adsorption and ensuring concentration stability and extended shelf life throughout the cylinder's use.

For field bump testing and confined space entry monitoring, disposable steel or aluminum cylinders in the 17–58 liter range are most commonly used. These compact, lightweight cylinders are DOT-compliant for field transport, do not require return logistics, and contain sufficient gas volume for multiple bump tests of 4-gas confined space monitors from brands like MSA, Dräger, Honeywell BW, and Industrial Scientific.
