The Lower Explosive Limit (LEL) for methane (CH4) is 5% by volume in air. Below this concentration, the methane-air mixture is too lean to ignite. The Upper Explosive Limit (UEL) is 15% by volume. Calibration gases are typically supplied at 50% LEL, or 2.5% CH4 by volume, to safely calibrate combustible gas detection equipment without creating an explosive atmosphere.

50% LEL methane calibration gas is typically balanced with nitrogen or zero air, depending on the application.
